been advertising. Being on a shoestring, Owner decided to try SEO and send
out weekly press releases. DogWidget.com has been indexed by several
major search engines, keywords have been refined thanks to the keyword
usage reports. Using the referral reports Owner sees that the SEO is
beginning to roll along nicely and is even picking up a little momentum.

Now
for the press releases. Owner sends out a new press release each week for
two months. Without the referral link report, Owner would be in the dark as
to whether the links on the releases were being used, unless it was a paid
distribution service (and that info is only for one release on that one site).

With the referral report, Owner was able to send out press releases at no
cost, and see what sites picked them up and posted them through the clicks
on the contact links. So the press release about Vacation dog widgets got a
lot of attention, excellent. That was time well spent. So now, Owner focus
can shift so efforts are optimized.

Why is all this so important?

I must answer this question with a question: do you know how your site
has been doing? If you do not have reports to give you the real-time traffic
information necessary to gauge visitor performance, how can you know how
your site is really doing? Are you thinking some decent sales is doing well?

Or because you get nice feedback, the site is ok? If this is the case, you are
settling for inferior results. This is not a solid way to manage any business,
and a Website is business. Why would you want to settle for “ok” when you
can get the tools at little expense that can make your site soar? Our Owner
wanted to quit the “day job” and make a real living from DogWidgets.com,
and with diligence and Web analytics, there is a good chance Owner will
succeed, and make a lot of dogs happy at the same time! Please don’t settle
for “ok.” Take your site to the next level. All it takes is having the right
information to work with. To paraphrase an old idiom, Visitor Knowledge is
Site Success.

How do they use my Website?

Your visitors are valuable. The visitors that buy your product or service are
priceless; they are the key element to success. You want to make them
happy and keep them coming back. You also want them to spread the word
about you. And yes, Web analytics can improve this as well. By knowing
how visitors are actually using your site, which pages they visit, how long
they view the pages they visit, what pages compel them to continue inside
the site (clickstream), and what pages they use to leave your site (exit
page) will tell you a great deal. For instance, back to our dog widget site.
Owner sees that the Uses for Widgets page seems to hold the visitor longer
than other information pages. It was written with humor and has a fun,
clean look. Wow, a winner page. However, Rainy Day Widget shows as a big
exit page. Not a good page, it appears to kill the site visits. Ok, Owner knows
that Rainy Day page needs some redesign and rewriting fast.

Don’t let your Website stall like a rainy day widget. As with any business, a
Website is needing continual marketing and refinement to stay focused and
on target. You need to keep on top of your markets, keep fresh, interesting
and compelling content, keep your site available to those who want your
product or service. Staying alive on the Web means you need visitors …
visitors who are looking for what you have to offer. With good Web analytics
you have the tools you need to put your site in front of your target market,
increase your ROI and find success on the Internet. And isn’t this why you

Web Site Help – Components That Affect Web Site Investment Size

Last article we looked at how a custom homebuilder handled my request for an estimate. We learned they don’t have any magic estimating bullet, but can provide a general cost range with planning guidance. We also learned they have trouble servicing potential customers without a budget.

This week, let’s look at the different components that affect the investment size of a developed and hosted Web site.

There are 4 basic cost types, all with many interdependencies.

Cost type 1: Strategic planning, Web design and Web development
Cost type 2: Monthly or yearly Web site hosting
Cost type 3: Daily/Monthly/Periodic Web site maintenance
Cost type 4: Web site traffic building

Let’s take a look at each in more detail:

1. Strategic Planning, Design and Development

A Web site should be designed to accomplish measurable business objectives. (The operative word is measurable.)

The time to compose a strategic plan depends on the number and complexity of each objective. For example, a company might want to use Web technology to help increase first time and repeat purchases, repeat Web site visits, newsletter subscriptions, and overall lead capture. They might want to implement cross-sell and up-sell strategies, reduce call center volume or eliminate administrative support.

That’s 9 total objectives, all of which vary in complexity and planning time.

On the other hand, a small business typically has one or two burning objectives. They all say, “give me qualified sales leads and ample Web site traffic.” Planning time is, of course, much less.

Side note: When budgets are limited, be sure to perform a cost/benefit analysis for each objective and implement those that will yield the highest return in the shortest amount of time. Check out: How to present a case for Website investments.

Once all business and marketing objectives are defined, more planning time is needed to set targets and benchmarks. For example, attract 2,500 unique visitors, receive 100 newsletter subscriptions, sell 50 widgets online and capture 50 widget-enhancement leads per month.

This way, you can track your site’s performance at meeting each objective against targets every month and prove whether or not the investment is producing a return. ROI is the only justification for Web initiatives.

Next, more planning time is needed to determine how Web technology (coupled with sales, marketing and usability strategies) will accomplish those defined objectives. This ties into interface, database and functionality design, as well as content creation and copywriting.

Then, time is needed for design, development (scripting, writing HTML, database connectivity), testing the Website for performance errors and transferring it to its hosting environment.

So you see, the investment size is dependent on the design and development time, which is determined by the strategic plan, which in turn depends solely on the business and marketing objectives.

2. Web site hosting

Hosting costs are, you guessed it, dependant on the technology used to develop the Web site and the resources (bandwidth, hardware, software and uptime reliability) used by the Web server. (A Web server is where the Web site resides in Cyberspace.)

Dedicated Web hosting (meaning only your Website resides on the server) may cost anywhere from $250 – $5,000 per month. Some dedicated hosting solutions include all of the hardware and software, Internet connectivity, a firewall for protecting data and managed services such as 24×7 support and daily data backups. Some solutions also include traffic analysis reports to help track objectives, and the ability to authenticate and transfer credit card transactions.

Others require customers to buy or rent its software separately.

One would select a dedicated hosting solution if he or she wants to sell various products online, host with multiple Web servers, capture and exchange massive amounts of data (through forms and other ordering systems), use SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption for commerce and integrate with off-line inventory and billing systems.

On the other hand, a static, non-interactive Web site would not require a dedicated Web server and could reside in a “shared environment” (meaning your Web site resides on a server with several others). This could cost as little as $10 per month. Hosting charges are defined by the technology used to operate and maintain the Web site.

3. Web site maintenance

The cost to maintain a Web site varies as well. Most non-technical Web site managers want the convenience and control for changes. Others would rather keep a partner on retainer and request changes periodically.

Here are a few maintenance options and their associated costs:

If your site is composed of static HTML pages, you can purchase MS Front Page for around $175 and make changes at will. All you need is FTP (File Transfer Protocol) clearance from your Web host. If your site uses VB Script, JavaScript or other (non HTML) scripting languages, avoid publishing with Front Page.

If your Web site is a little more advanced, you may want to consider Macromedia’s Dream Weaver. It’s a little more flexible, a little more technical, but much less likely to corrupt your pages when publishing. You can purchase a license for about $300 and transfer new and modified pages with your browser via FTP.

Another option is to investigate content management utilities. They can be purchased as a “one-size-fits-all” solution or developed to your specifications.

These can be expensive, but will make publishing Web pages easier than using MS Word. Web site maintenance cost depends on your method of publishing.

4. Web site traffic building

There are many ways to drive traffic to a Web site and all have different costs. Using search engines and directories are the only method that should be addressed before the site is actually developed.

Let me explain…

To rank well on the various search engines and directories (Yahoo, MSN, Netscape, Google, AltaVista, etc.), your Web site must be optimized with specific, targeted and “not-so-competitive” keywords. This requires a little competitive intelligence, creative copy writing and technical know-how.

Once you have your key word list, strategically plant them like little seeds throughout your Web page in places such as links, title tags, alt tags, header copy, page names, etc.

To do this after a site has been developed could require a major overhaul.For example, we invested many long-hour days to research the most commonly used “Web Design” related search terms. We then determined how competitive our geographic landscape was for each of those terms and optimized our site accordingly. We did this before the first page was designed.

As a result, we rank in the top 10 of almost every search engine for our search terms. The extra time for analysis and planning will pay dividends for years.

A specialty company may charge as much as $10,000 for the analysis, optimization and submission service. There are also fixed costs payable to the search engines. I think we paid a little under $600 to cover the “Non-Pay-Per-Click” playing field.

So there you have it. When it’s all said and done…

Blog Strategy – General Settings in WordPress Installation

The general settings sub-panel has general information,s uch as, the title, the tagline, email address and date formatting that you’ll usually need to enter once and then not change again.

The title and tagline are the first two lines at the top of the general settings page.

The title line, along with the tagline, are used in most themes and also in rss feeds and atom feeds.

Any changes that are saved to the title or tagline are reflected immediately.

The next line is the WordPress address (url). It is the location of all the core WordPress programs. Make sure the complete url, including the http:// appears as in the initial installation. You can add the www to the url for a more familiar look. (But a word of caution: when you add the www and save the screen WordPress will log you out and ask you to re-enter the site. This is the normal process)

if you installed WordPress to a sub-directory then this url should include that sub directory as part of the complete address.

The address (url) is typically the same address as the WordPress address (url). These can be different if you installed the WordPress program files in it’s own separate directory ( for instance /blog ) and you wanted people to type only the simpler homepage address without the /blog then this is where you give WordPress that information. For most installations the WordPress address and the site address are the same.

The e-mail address is used by WordPress to send you notifications and email alerts about maintenance and administration issues. When someone registers then WordPress will send you a notification at this email address. Or if you are moderating your comments then this email address will be sent a notification that a comment is being held for approval. The email address you enter here will not be displayed. You can change this to any valid e-mail address you want.

The membership option is used to register users. Membership grants different levels of access content and even it’s operation.

WordPress is set up so you can have others involved.

If you check this box then everyone will be register automatically. Membership has five levels each with increasing access. A new member is initially entered at the default subscriber level. Although you can change this on the line below.

If you leave this unchecked then you will need to manually register all of the users under the users link on the navigation panel.

Just below the membership button are the 5 different membership levels. These levels determine what access each member has. The higher the level the more options available. Setting this line will determine the initial level each new user will have.

The default is subscriber.

A subscriber has access to the dashboard screen and they can view and change options in their profiles under the your profiles and the personal options page. They do not have access to any of the site account settings.

When a subscriber logs in at the /wp-admin screen they will have access to this screen.

This is the subscriber panel access screen where their personal changes are made.

A contributor has all the access of a subscriber plus permission to upload files and to write, edit and manage their own posts. A contributor cannot however publish a post, the posts are reviewed by the administrator who decides if the post is to be published.

The contributor screen looks like this. With access to the post screen.

Authors have the access of the contributor but with the added benefit of publishing their own post without admin approval. They have access to post and publish functions as well as access to media files.

Editors have all the access to authors but they can moderate comments, manage categories and links, edit pages from other authors posts.

Administrator has full access to all the functions and operation.

The timezone is where you set your local time clock in relation to the utc or coordinated universal time standard which is roughly equivalent to gmt or greenwich mean time.
